We support the aim of achieving modal shift from private to public transport. For the best chance to achieve this significant housing and commercial development sites should be located within 800 m of existing and newly proposed public transport hubs.

Yes, agree. We need much improved and cheaper public transport. Cleaner air and a greener environment to encourage walking. Important to consider asthetics.

Our client supports the principle of locating development in sustainable locations which are well-served or could be well-served by public transport. The Site is well-served by existing bus stops directly adjacent which provide good transport links for potential future residents.
References to ‘the Site’ mean Site Ref: GN6 (Gillingham No.3 and 4) identified in the Land Availability Assessment 2023 and as fully detailed in our letter of representations submitted to the Council.

We have had decades where every aspect of our lives has been dominated by a personal mode of transport in the form of the car. This has allowed facilities and services to be ever more concentrated into larger and larger far-flung units. Reversing this trend will rely on peoples’ experience of walking, cycling and using public transport, being a pleasant one.

Transport needs a lot of consideration. The existing road structure is appalling. There are also constant road works everywhere you go. There is little or no coordination of these works as there was in the past. Local roads need to be upgraded before any further development and some clever ideas put in place. Much improved and safe cycle and foot paths are required. A circular bus route should be employed Chatham - Rainham - Gillingham with regular services and in-time information at bus stops. Consideration should also be given to a circular tram route.

We desperately need an efficient and affordable local bus service. The current providers are abysmal. Cars are required for evening activities as buses are infrequent and unreliable. Greater restriction on private cars in urban areas, eg 20mph limit, could help the move to using public transport and also reduce pollution.

This takes us back to the fact they are asking for too many houses. This is not London!
