They should also not have an adverse impact to other residents and due consideration needs to be taken of the impact that this would have on visitors to the area and therefore loss of revenue to existing businesses. Also consideration must be taken of the road network and how this could adversely impact of the well being of residents.

A review of Conservation Areas must be considered and areas such as New Road Chatham focussed upon. Medway Council should never have allowed the traffic from its reconfiguration of Chatham to have despoiled this area; this needs addressing and remedial action to help residents conserve homes should be effected. Advice should be given and future, similar proposals should not meet with the hostility Medway Council demonstrated. It should also be explained, not all conservation areas contain old buildings e.g. Kitchener Barracks. Residents living there and site developers should be purposefully guided.

The issue lies with Medway Council, as many developments fail to genuinely benefit the community. Often, the minimal advantages provided do not justify the high costs involved. For example, while the policy states that "development within a Conservation Area will only be permitted where it contributes positively to the conservation or enhancement of the character, appearance, and distinctiveness of the area," this is not always reflected in practice. Many projects undermine the area's character and offer little real benefit to local residents. Medway Council needs to ensure that developments align with conservation goals and truly serve the community’s needs.

"Development within a Conservation Area will only be permitted where it contributes positively to the conservation or enhancement of the character, appearance and distinctiveness of the area" The proposed development of Ironmonger's Yard will determine whether the council does mean it intends to abide by its own conservation area plans and recommendations. They are quite robust and I hope that it will abide by them. It appears conservation officers are always overridden by planning and development. What is the point of a Conservation Department then? I note there are two vacancies, is it being conveniently phased out?
