Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2024)

Representation ID: 1795

Received: 16/07/2024

Respondent: Mr Declan Kennedy

Representation Summary:

Chatham's high street could be revitalized by incorporating more traditional (renaissance, Victorian, Edwardian architecture) architecture, or even a blend of modern and classic styles. Northern town centres often thrive thanks to their stunning, large-scale buildings. These impressive structures, often reminiscent of department stores, not only attract major brands but also lend a unique character to the high street. Imagine Chatham's high street adorned with tall, traditional buildings, creating a more vibrant and appealing atmosphere, and also, it improves the mood of others.

Representation Summary:

There seems to be a lack of joined-up thinking with the parking in Chatham. Carparks are difficult to access, not well signposted and discourage visitors. The disjointed and hidden parking provision looses out against Hempstead Valley and Dockside.

Representation Summary:

What is happening to the GO Outdoors and the Gala Bingo sites? Pentagon has empty shops. Wilko site and others have been used for various market type events, and pop up Christmas shops. To advertise and promote the Pentagon as the main shopping site ,falls down a bit because not all the shops are being occupied. Once the top floor is up and running this will enhance the offer. Changing the toilets in the Pentagon is so much better.

Good to hear brown field sites are being considered first before green but we need to see it. It would be good if an Aldi supermarket could be put in place of the old in shops

Representation Summary:

The library as a strategic anchor should be considered. It is an educational asset more than a leisure or communication conduit. Is there any evidence there are strong university links? Chatham Railway station needs a new forecourt which should open out to the bus stops nearby, as originally envisaged.

Respondent: Miss Rachael Selleck

Representation Summary:

Chatham town centre requires urgent and significant investment to address its decline over recent years. The area has deteriorated, with safety concerns such as increased crime and numerous shop closures. To revitalise Chatham and restore its appeal, a comprehensive redevelopment plan is essential. This should focus on improving safety, enhancing infrastructure, and supporting local businesses. Without substantial investment and strategic improvements, Chatham will continue to suffer, impacting both residents and visitors. Prioritising these changes will help rebuild the town centre into a thriving, safe, and vibrant hub.

Respondent: Mrs Maureen Wade

Representation Summary:

Consideration should be given to providing dedicated bus links for tourists who wish to explore all the Towns. Other places I have visited across the country provide this service that visitors can use as a direct link instead of the residential buses that are not direct. This would encourage visitors and increase footfall in all centres. There should be mixed residential, business and entertainment development in the centres encouraging people to live, work and play locally.
