Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2024)

Representation ID: 1796

Received: 16/07/2024

Respondent: Mr Declan Kennedy

Representation Summary:

Gillingham High Street can be a lively hub, but it craves investment. Repetitive shops like hairdressers dominate, creating a dull vibe. Modern spaces, green areas, and a mix of traditional and modern buildings (like London's Elephant and Castle) could revitalize it. Imagine tall buildings with shops and apartments, a new public square with the relocated war memorial, and nods to Gillingham's history – the sappers and Will Adams. With inspiration from successful projects, Medway Council can create a high street that reflects Gillingham's unique character.

Representation Summary:

Gillingham Town Centre can be so much better. The Town Centre plan has been in existence now for about 5years. The retail shopping area and the diverse shops that have sprung up since, have proved that there is a definite market for diversification.
Unfortunately the Halifax Bank is going to close , and this will as well as the empty Wilko store leave a large gap in the High St. Open to Vandalism .
A Public Realm space is needed to give the High St a sense of purpose. MACA are looking for a building for a Community Centre.

Representation Summary:

I never shop in Gillingham High Street , l find it an unwelcoming and frankly depressing high street probably down to the roads that cross it and run through it . It needs to be made more "shopper friendly"

Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2024)

Representation ID: 3881

Received: 08/09/2024

Respondent: Miss Rachael Selleck

Representation Summary:

Gillingham District Centre urgently requires substantial investment and improvement. The area has seen a decline in its appeal and functionality, with many shops and facilities underperforming or closing. To revitalise the district, significant work is needed to enhance infrastructure, boost local businesses, and improve safety and aesthetics. Without such investment, Gillingham District Centre will continue to struggle, impacting local residents and the broader community. Addressing these issues is crucial for fostering a vibrant, thriving area that meets the needs of its residents and attracts visitors.

As part of the future regeneration of Gillingham Town centre, car parking charges (up to 3hrs) should be scrapped to encourage people to come, so that the area can compete with Hempstead Valley Shopping centre where parking is free for up to 6 hrs!
