Flooding - the 4th September 2023 once in 70 years storm showed that houses never at risk in practice before are now at risk.
Sewage - now the impact of adding housing without ensuring that sufficient sewage treatment is available is understood Medway needs a significant upgrade to our sewage treatment facilities first.
Water - housing should be designed with grey water re-use and water butts for garden use. Drought is becoming more frequent and will continue to do so.
Energy efficiency is essential not just for deprived households.

We need to dictate higher standards from anyone building. The UK housing stock pays lip service in comparison to houses being built in other countries.
As the sunniest area in the UK, whole roof solar, working alongside tight insulation and heat pumps could significantly reduce household bills. Orientation of houses and apartment blocks needs to be considered seriously to make the most use of these assets.
Apartment blocks must now make use of solar with new systems available, including retro-fitting where necessary.

Medway's draft has no mandatory HIAs, no targeted inequality strategy, and no enforceable design quality or monitoring framework. These omissions are not minor-they materially reduce protection for residents from deprivation, environmental decline, and unsightly development.

The effect is to institutionalise lower expectations for the health, environment, and visual quality of Medway's communities compared with those in neighbouring counties. This sends a damaging and unjust message: that Medway residents deserve less procedural protection, less ambition, and a lower quality of life than people in other parts of the South East.

The environment is essential, but you keep ruining it by building over the countryside and taking away our countryside and green spaces. To build on the area known as the “green lung of Medway” is the worst decision you could have made for Medway and now it’s too late.
