In the main I support Policy S3, but mitigation is not always possible. For example, with the nationally important Nightingale, the bird prefers to breed in mature scrub, and dense areas of vegetation. These areas cannot be easily replaced, and it's not possible to create them overnight. Not only do these breeding areas need to be recorded and protected, but other suitable areas need protecting too in order to enable the Nightingale population to increase in our area. Nearby development and any disturbance to these sites must be avoided.

The RSPB considers that the Bird Wise SAMMS reflects the current best available evidence on how to address in combination impacts from recreational disturbance as a result of increased residential development close to the coastal Special Protection Areas/Ramsar/SSSI. This strategy includes monitoring to ensure that this approach continues to be effective and the Local Plan should ensure that it supports this strategy and any future updates. For sites that may have an impact on these sites on their own due to proximity or size it is important that they may need to deliver additional mitigation plus the SAMMS contribution.

The land allocated for potential housing to the SE of Cliffe Pools, Site SR6, raises concerns of exacerbating recreational disturbance impacts to RSPB Cliffe Pools (part of the Thames Estuary and Marshes SPA/Ramsar site) that may not be mitigable through Bird Wise contributions alone due to proximity and scale of the housing. We urge that evidence is sort to demonstrate that harmful impacts from recreational disturbance could be avoided or adequately mitigated before the site is put forward for allocation. There must be policy here to include further assessment to inform robust mitigation measures, in addition to the SAMMS.

Medway Council should prioritise the environment across the entire region, not just select areas. It’s crucial that the Council thoroughly reviews its impact on habitats and becomes genuinely aware of the current environmental conditions. The reports and assessments provided are outdated and inaccurate, failing to reflect the true state of local ecosystems. To truly support conservation and sustainability, Medway Council must address these issues comprehensively and ensure that all planning decisions are based on up-to-date and truthful information. Only then can they genuinely uphold their commitment to protecting and enhancing the environment throughout Medway.

governance of Birdwise needs to be looked at- its chairman was the leader of the council and its efforts to protect wildlife have been "strangely" anodyne. giving them so much money is wasted when they are compromised in such a way.

I fully support all efforts to protect the North Kent Estuary and Marshes designated sites.
As previously stated, I am apprehensive about suggestions of eco-tourism attracting tourists to the Peninsular, when there will already be increased disturbance to the birdlife from new housing development and a substantial increase in casual walkers.

It is not necessary and in fact wholly undesirable to build near nature sites and protected zones. Our wildlife is already being decimated due to human encroachment. Why doesn't Medway Council simply buy up cheap housing blocks in the north of England and house any influx there as Newham Council did with Anchorage House? Once our natural habitats are gone, they are gone forever. And the direction of travel is only one way.

Compensatory schemes are useless to the wildlife as that habitat will be destroyed and this can not successfully be replaced. We are essentially prioritising the people over the habitat which was not ours to begin with.
