Medway needs to robustly protect its infrastructure from neighbouring developments such as at Lidsing which will have a huge impact on surrounding roads including Luton Road [REDACTED], more so than Maidstone as it’s on our borders and and residents would have to use mostly Medway roads to get to Maidstone. We must protect AONB’s without exception.

Here light pollution is mentioned, but why not for the rest of the towns.
Retrofitting lights as they need changing would be cheaper, and would progressively work towards all of the improvements the dark sky movement cares about.

The plan sounds good. However, so far Medway is not doing well at all at conserving its natural heritage and landscapes or protecting the environment. The rural character has been lost and the ever smaller pockets of countryside and beautiful landscapes that are left such as Medway's "Green Lung" or the area of beautiful rolling hills which comprise the area from Capstone to Lidsing are being threatened with major developments. Its loss will lead to a lack of wellbeing and health in the community. Eco-tourism will be virtually non-existent since there will barely be any nature except flat uninspiring Grain.

The impact of development/structure should not be considered alone. The additional impact of increased movement, accessibility of utlities, etc should be considered as increased traffic, septic tanks, etc have an additional impact.

AONB's need a balance. The M2 Junction 5 flyover A249 was objected to by KCC's AONB management team.
The SoS approved it so that thousands of houses can be built. There was a moratorium. So a balance for the greater good is still required.

Development within an AONB should not be permitted outside of existing settlements/buildings. The AONB is about preserving these areas for public good and for future generations, if development is for business or private housing then this should not be acceptable as its damaging a public good with no public benefit in return.

The last remaining green space between Hempstead and Maidstone (and Hempstead and the motorway) that is under control of Medway should be maintained (or even partially reforested as a green lung from the motorway).
Lidsing's "Garden Development" - which is being challenged in The High Court (and is anything but a "garden") - is not within Medway, but an example of a council looking to put the burden of services on another council, while taking the income from council tax etc.

It is extremely important that these areas are retained for the benefit of all to enjoy and should not be used for the benefit of the few or for financial gain. Medway has a very small area of National Landscape compared to other boroughs and it is therefore extremely important that this should not be destroyed. Given the population within Medway these areas will be of extreme importantance in maintaining the well being of its people, both young and old.

I support this policy but would add that any medium-large scale development is viewed as a last resort, and only when it can be shown conclusively to be in the national interest by virtue of its importance to national infrastructure or to be of exceptional economic importance.

The AONBs within Medway are an exceptional landscape afforded the highest level of protection and we are pleased to note that the council has a duty to further the purpose of the AONB. It is essential that the council upholds the directive that major developments are only permitted in exceptional circumstances and where they can be shown to be in the public interest. It is also important that measures to "preserve and enhance nature's beauty" associated with any development, are carefully monitored by the council, ensuring that landscape schemes such as new hedging are properly maintained and re-planted as necessary.

I agree with this policy but existing plans for Gibraltar Farm and Lidsing push right up against the AONB and the urbanisation of Capstone Valley will be very damaging to those living around it. Based on existing plans including Lidsing Village 5000+ homes will be built in the existing land and I think that this is totally unacceptable given the total absence of infrastructure proposals.

The plans to address the consequences of the development such as loss of species and increase in the number of people suffering health conditions and deaths. How many mature trees will be cut down to make way for buildings, only to replant small trees to replace them that take years to mature? t is well evidenced the contribution mature trees make to the environment and the impact the destruction of these vital species have had on the environment. Again this section is simply paying lip service rather than a sensitive acknowledgement and respect for natural and natural spaces in Medway.

Need to support and enhance the national designation and recognise significant development pressure from change of land use from industrial agriculture and viniculture. Loss of arable, orchards, chalk grassland are currently impacting nature recovery and resource protection, increasing flood risk, loss of protected species and habitat. Tranquillity and dark skies are under threat from rapid land use change that is poorly managed requiring communities to spot and highlight these to relevant authorities, the local plan needs to respect and protect national and internationally important landscapes and protected sites not undermine these in pursuit of inappropriate developments.

I hope that this intention is evident when it comes to proposed major developments in KDNL areas in Cuxton.

I am pleased to see the commitment to conserving and enhancing the Kent Downs National Landscape and, at 4.7.2, the description of it as a 'remarkable survival as a peaceful, rural landscape - despite its proximity to settlements, industry and transport infrastructure.'
Good to particularly note in the focus list dry valleys, important views, relative tranquillity and remoteness, and the need to avoid intrusion from light pollution, noise, and motion.

I am happy that Medway’s stated policy is to protect and conserve the AONB and the Metropolitan Greenbelt.
The area around Cuxton and Upper and Lower Bush, as well as Ranscombe Farm, run by Plantlife, are all areas of exceptional natural beauty and it is crucial that they remain unspoilt. They deserve the highest possible protection.
