Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2024)
Policy T5: Student Accommodation
Representation ID: 2463
Received: 04/09/2024
Respondent: Greenwich Students' Union
Students in Medway experience a shortage of affordable housing that is close enough to campus.
Students want accommodation close to local amenities with affordable transport links. Students are also keen to be a part of the community so welcome blended housing.
Private student housing can be exploited by landlords with higher rents and unsuitable conditions. Students would welcome developments with responsible private landlords who work closely with the Universities and the Council to meet students’ needs. Purpose built student accommodation is typically more expensive than private rental shared housing and is located in town centres which are typically priced.

Policy S10: Economic Strategy
Representation ID: 2464

Medway has an excellent tradition of industry which Students at Medway are keen to maintain. We would welcome continued investment in Science and Engineering to allow our students to remain in the area post-graduation with good graduate roles available. This is in keeping with the culture of the towns and links the current higher and further education offering with local industry in the dockyard.

Students in Medway would welcome opportunities to remain in the towns post-graduation but point to the lack of graduate opportunities in the area. Investment in further education schemes that can allow Medway to compete with London to maintain skilled workers is welcome.

Representation ID: 2468
Received: 04/09/2024
Respondent: Greenwich Students' Union
Students at Medway welcome development in town centres as key areas for social cohesion. Students seek to enjoy their local community and business. Transport is a barrier to students and need assurances of affordable activity to engage in.
Students can support with economic growth of areas so we would encourage policymakers to appeal to this group with student-friendly activities.
Increasingly, our student population is alcohol free and interested in sport and sustainability so it is important to not rely on pubs.
Many students are international and seek to enjoy local culture and heritage

Vision for Access and Movement in Medway
Representation ID: 2470
Received: 04/09/2024
Respondent: Greenwich Students' Union
Students at Medway would welcome the following initiatives;
Increased cycling routes including rental bike schemes to connect the towns in a sustainable and affordable way
Increased bus routes
Increased traffic free areas to encourage walking and public transport options
Students are generally as a group more dependent on public transport than others. Therefore any improvements to public transport in the area are welcome. Of particular concern are bus services, as well as the effectiveness of services at peak times. This is especially relevant for Medway students, as a significant number commute to the Medway campuses.
