Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2024)

Policy S2: Conservation and Enhancement of the Natural Environment

Representation ID: 2654

Received: 06/09/2024

Respondent: Mrs Louise Putnam

Representation Summary:

Wildlife assets need to be more joined up - with green corridors, not just isolated "islands" rich in biodiversity. Mammals, amphibians and reptiles need to be able to traverse the countryside in order to breed. Development, particularly housing has a negative effect - not just by the loss of land that may be rich in wildlife, but an increase in people will negatively impact on the environment - more people means more disturbance. River and estuary use has to be done in a way that does not cause disturbance, particularly to water birds, whether they are feeding, breeding or roosting.

3.2.1

Representation ID: 2655

Received: 06/09/2024

Respondent: Mrs Louise Putnam

Representation Summary:

I support the urban-led approach to providing housing. Using brownfield land and focussing on already urban areas with the infrastructure already in place seems the sensible option. I understand that not all housing can be provided in these areas, but I question the locations of some of the housing sites in the preferred option. I object to Hoo being a focus for development, and I object to the housing sites suggested in Allhallows. Allhallows lies in close proximity to protected wildlife areas and there's simply not the infrastructure to support an increase in people.

Policy S2: Conservation and Enhancement of the Natural Environment

Representation ID: 2664

Received: 06/09/2024

Respondent: Mrs Louise Putnam

Representation Summary:

I support Policy S2, but nature and the environment must come first. We are the most nature depleted country in Europe and we have a unique opportunity to lead nature recovery in England. We need more green and wildlife friendly linkages between sites to enable mammals, amphibians and reptiles to travel from one site to another in order to capitalise on the biggest gene pool possible. To avoid in-breeding, we don't want just isolated "pockets" of biodiversity, but need them to be more joined up.

Policy S3: North Kent Estuary and Marshes designated sites

Representation ID: 2671

Received: 06/09/2024

Respondent: Mrs Louise Putnam

Representation Summary:

In the main I support Policy S3, but mitigation is not always possible. For example, with the nationally important Nightingale, the bird prefers to breed in mature scrub, and dense areas of vegetation. These areas cannot be easily replaced, and it's not possible to create them overnight. Not only do these breeding areas need to be recorded and protected, but other suitable areas need protecting too in order to enable the Nightingale population to increase in our area. Nearby development and any disturbance to these sites must be avoided.

Policy S4: Landscape protection and enhancement

Representation ID: 2676

Received: 06/09/2024

Respondent: Mrs Louise Putnam

Representation Summary:

In the support Policy S4 but there's conflict here with your proposed housing sites. Particularly in Hoo, an area the plan identifies for more housing opportunities. The increased urbanisation and sprawl of Hoo must be avoided as it has a negative impact on wildlife and the character of the landscape. Similarly, in Allhallows the proposed housing sites will adversely impact the rural landscape character, increase disturbance to wildlife, and lead to a loss in biodiversity.

Policy DM4: Noise and Light Pollution

Representation ID: 2678

Received: 06/09/2024

Respondent: Mrs Louise Putnam

Representation Summary:

I support Policy DM4. We need to reduce existing light pollution as well as avoid it in new developments. Existing sources of light pollution need to be addressed with environmentally friendly, less polluting lighting.

Policy S7: Green Belt

Representation ID: 2679

Received: 06/09/2024

Respondent: Mrs Louise Putnam

Representation Summary:

I support Policy S7. The protection of the Green Belt in the west of Medway is important to prevent urban sprawl. However, we need to be pragmatic with our choices for more housing, preferably locating it in urban areas rather than the open countryside.
