Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2024)
Vision for Medway in 2041
Representation ID: 3744
Received: 08/09/2024

It is all very well setting out a plan which protects the heritage and allows people to find a place to live, without the proper infrastructure invested in transport, Medway, especially the areas in Lordswood will simply be choked with traffic. Improving access to M2 is not the answer, without access to reliable and affordable public transport, the area will be grid locked and we will be choking on fumes, more so than ever as the green lung will not longer exist to remove pollutants from the atomosphere. the impact on biodiversity will be catastrophic.

You cannot say that you are working towards Net Zero and sustainable solutions when you intend to allow building to take place on agricultural land. The impact on future generations will be catastrophic as once this land is lost to concrete it cannot be recovered. This is a classic example of short termism, yes you may solve housing crises but a much more catastrophic crises by creating flooding both flash flooding and causing flooding for residents in Luton Rd, not just residents but for public transport as well. Not to mention that population numbers are in decline, empty houses?

Supporting people to lead healthy lives and strengthening our communities

During lockdown, many of Medway's residents discovered the green spaces, walking in woods, on public footpaths in green areas, removing this will increase health issues, not reduce them, while phyiscally bike paths are being provided, what about the emotional well being of those who feel increasingly hemmed in, who can no longer hear the bird song, have to deal with crowding of thier homes? How does this loss of green lung help those of us who struggle with lung conditions? Short termism comes to mind again

Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2024)
Securing jobs and developing skills for a competitive economy

Building on green land rather than in town hubs with transport links does not create employment, especially if there is no improvement in transport links rurally. As a commuter I can testify that current roads are not up to the weight of traffic that building on transport deprived areas will create and no amount of road building will create space for in excess of 12000 extra cars in the Lordswood area. There is simply no where for business to thrive or exist in residential areas to reduce the number of extra cars this would create.

I am a proud Medway resident, it is a great place to live, to fully develop sustainabilty in the area and increase pride is to invest in the residents by thinking about buses such as in Manchester, to keep the green lung and lead in Net Zero and sustainablity, perhaps make sustainability at the heart of the plan, make the future of Medway green and adopting the UN SDGs

Spatial Development Strategy

While regeneration is excellent, side by side with that is the choice in all 3 plans to develop Capstone, this simply put, puts greater pressure on what is the green lung in Medway. Already according to Environment Agency Lordwood is at risk of flash flooding, how much greater will that be when half the lung is concretised? Already there are concerns about Luton Rd's risk due to East Hill, the fact that Gibraltar Farm and Capstone will add nearly 4000 houses means that all flood risks are greater. More financial impact on residents because of higher flood Risk Insurance!

I cannot understand the need to develop further on the green lung. With East Hill, Gibraltar Farm and potentially Lidsding, a total of 3550 new houses how will the lung continue to perform. It goes against the idea of limiting damage to biodiversity and despite the risk of flooding where is the water coming from? The Envirionment Agency estimates that without further building Medway will reach continuous drought conditions by 2050. What are the plans to prevent this? With climate change already happening very quickly I am worried about how this will impact the area
