Policy S6: Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Landscape

Representation ID: 3799

Received: 08/09/2024

Respondent: Mr Brian McDonald

Representation Summary:

Need to support and enhance the national designation and recognise significant development pressure from change of land use from industrial agriculture and viniculture. Loss of arable, orchards, chalk grassland are currently impacting nature recovery and resource protection, increasing flood risk, loss of protected species and habitat. Tranquillity and dark skies are under threat from rapid land use change that is poorly managed requiring communities to spot and highlight these to relevant authorities, the local plan needs to respect and protect national and internationally important landscapes and protected sites not undermine these in pursuit of inappropriate developments.

Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2024)

Policy DM1: Flood and Water Management

Representation ID: 3814

Received: 08/09/2024

Respondent: Mr Brian McDonald

Representation Summary:

Agricultural land use and change requires scrutiny to avoid negative impacts from surface water run off and increased flood risk to local communities and property. Arable conversion to viniculture creates a major risk, land use management plans for businesses engaged in this significant change should be required to have a water management plan that mitigates negative impacts and risk and should be overseen by local authority and Environment Agency.

Use of pesticides and fertilizer should also be managed better and regulations policed to avoid nutrient run off and polluting groundwater. Local Authority should support citizen groups to aid this.

Policy T14: Rural Economy

Representation ID: 3846

Received: 08/09/2024

Respondent: Mr Brian McDonald

Representation Summary:

Recognise and value the natural assets as the foundation of a strong rural economy. Inappropriate development and industrial agri/viniculture are to be avoided. Nurture the natural fabric and restore nature in our rural areas and avoid sacrificing these for short term or unsustainable economic development. Local, national and international protections should be proactively supported and not undermined in the pursuit of short term profit or mistaken new shiny transformational mirages that benefit the rich and not the population of Medway and surrounding areas.

Local food and healthy activity should be a key component with mixed farming and horticultural activity.
