Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2024)
Vision for Medway in 2041
Representation ID: 1801
Received: 17/07/2024
Respondent: Mr Keith Clear
The perception in Medway is that the picture isn’t as rosy as the plan would have us believe. There have been some positive change such as the school streets and Red routes and the improvements in the Luton Road area with its own local plan and now we need to improve on that for the whole of Medway. Looking for better transport links including use of the river to alleviate car use. Much, much more social housing people aren’t all able to afford to buy or private rent.

We all went green spaces so we need to preserve what we’ve got and and create more. We need to have a travel system similar to Transport for London where we can tap in and tap out or combined travel tickets. We also need to consider our special needs and disabilities and diverse communities to make travel and access easier. It would be good to have a tram system too especially connecting outlying areas enabling them to engage with Medway night time economy. This would make public transport more convenient.and ultimately more popular.

Supporting people to lead healthy lives and strengthening our communities

Luton Road has seen the lack of good quality rentals and houses of multiple occupancy just being left to deteriorate by absentee landlords. Laws need tightening. There are many Victorian houses that are not energy efficient so need help towards retrofitting insulation. New building should reflect the character of the area and have height restrictions, five storeys is more than enough. More family homes with gardens, flats are not family friendly. New private developments should be charged more for infrastructure, roads, schools, health centres, community support and local events etc.More disability bungalow communities with on-site support.

As the towns improve we need to increase tourism and encourage visitors to our historic area. Develop a genuine night time economy with clubs and a top class theatre, like The Marlowe, to attract big touring shows. Improve our town centres by encouraging unique individual businesses to make shopping a must, Whitstable springs to mind. Use empty retail units for pop up new ventures, art exhibitions, etc. all would increase employment opportunities. More technology firms and creative industry we have Intra and some businesses already in the Dockyard. Make Medway a proper university city with all that comes with

It goes without saying that we need sustainable growth where hopefully all sections of the community will benefit. This will improve health and outcomes. We need to ensure our green spaces are protected. Do not allow waterfront developments and deprive the community of access to the riverfront.

In relation to retail outlets the Council needs to stop the incursion of multiple fast food outlets and encourage local shopping with greengrocers, butchers, bakers and grocery stores for people who don’t want to go into our towns which will encourage people to not use cars. Do not allow waterfront developments and deprive the community of access to the riverfront.

Looking at this topic none of the options are really great but the least worst option for me would be the blended option which increases housing across Medway and not just the areas where there is already too much development. I can foresee a lot of opposition from areas where there is a high percentage of more desirable properties but sharing the burden is much fairer and we need much, much more social housing especially in the areas which have had luxury homes overlooking the Medway or rural areas. Making communities more diverse.

There is a need to seriously consider people’s representations and they need to genuinely influence any decisions by Medway Council and not just pay lip service. All of my previous comments contribute to this section.

All of my previous comments contribute to this section. Clearly any new development must consider its impact on roads, health infrastructure, transport, air quality, water services, refuse collection etc. Sustainability is the key and protection of and creation of new outdoor green spaces. Also new developments need to have a community hall or place where the local community can meet for social events especially outlying areas with poor transport connections

Medway has a number of areas of natural and scientific importance and development must be kept well clear of those areas. We need to link in with the National plans and ring fence those areas. I have noticed the diversity of wild flowers and areas where nature has been allowed to flourish encouraging more butterflies and moths and giving valuable green spaces alongside some of our busiest roads. We need to encourage more home owners to have space for nature whether it’s pots and window boxes or digging up driveway’s to revert to gardens. Maybe Medway Garden competition again.

Definitely new developments should make a considerable contribution to the protection and sustainability of these areas. It has taken many years to develop these areas so we cannot allow development to encroach

There are large areas of concrete landscapes in Medway and just because we need housing doesn’t mean we have to restrict green areas. There are many examples across the country where urban development has allowed green spaces. There could be vertical ones too. There are instances of birds of prey making their homes on tall office buildings. The use of green roofs or green walls could encourage more biodiversity into our town centres especially if we reduce motor traffic into more sustainable methods.
