Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2024)
Prepared for a sustainable and green future
Representation ID: 1868
Received: 29/07/2024
Respondent: Mr simon marchant
I would like to request that the council work to create darker skies than we now have.
Darker skies require an adjustment in the way we use lighting. This can be cheaper at the construction phase than ordinary lighting and saves money everywhere it used.
It also is good for our health, good for wildlife and biodiversity, reduces crime, and is good for science and amateur astronomers.

There is no mention of lighting and the damage it does wildlife, our health, and crime figures.
Working towards dark skies would be cheaper, with better lighting and reduce crime.

Here light pollution is mentioned, but why not for the rest of the towns.
Retrofitting lights as they need changing would be cheaper, and would progressively work towards all of the improvements the dark sky movement cares about.

Again light pollution should not just be about new builds in special places.
Light pollution negatively affects our health, nature and biodiversity, crime rates and amenities like stargazing.
It would be cheaper and reduce crime to work towards dark skies across Medway.

Higher standards for building codes were proposed years ago, but then dumped, as governments do.
Surely, if you accept we have a climate emergency then houses should be built to the highest environmental standard.
Properly built houses need little or no heating, have solar panels, heat pumps and grey water systems, but do not cost that much more to build.
The retail price of a house has only a little connection with the cost of construction.
