Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2024)
Policy S6: Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Landscape
Representation ID: 1887
Received: 05/08/2024
Respondent: Mr Craig Grindley
The plan sounds good. However, so far Medway is not doing well at all at conserving its natural heritage and landscapes or protecting the environment. The rural character has been lost and the ever smaller pockets of countryside and beautiful landscapes that are left such as Medway's "Green Lung" or the area of beautiful rolling hills which comprise the area from Capstone to Lidsing are being threatened with major developments. Its loss will lead to a lack of wellbeing and health in the community. Eco-tourism will be virtually non-existent since there will barely be any nature except flat uninspiring Grain.

Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2024)
Prepared for a sustainable and green future

To address the Climate Emergency we need more trees. Trees do not have enough protection and there is little or no effort to reforest. Medway Council/previous governments, with their obsession for building, have allowed swathes of woodland to be removed and replaced with housing.
In Walderslade, in summer I notice that the temperature showing on my car drops by 3 or 4 degrees Celsius when driving through the area of woodland around Boxley Road. Trees and woodland are essential for adapting to climate change and capture carbon. So increase and enhance our woodland! Turn countryside into woodland, not housing!

Policy S2: Conservation and Enhancement of the Natural Environment
Representation ID: 1889
Received: 05/08/2024
Respondent: Mr Craig Grindley
Providing access to nature should be achieved by protecting and enhancing the areas of nature we have left. Sadly, all of your plans include a loss of nature and countryside. Not just any countryside, but beautiful countryside of rolling hills and valleys that are a continuation of the Downs.
Building houses and then just adding some cycle paths and small green areas is insulting compared to the few pockets of countryside we have left and enjoy. It is essential for our wellbeing.
Medway is a small borough and has little space left for building, unless building upwards.

Policy DM3: Air Quality
Representation ID: 1890
Received: 05/08/2024

If you wish to have clean air and protect the environment of the Medway towns, then it is essential that you do not "close in" or "reduce" the green corridors that exist in Medway. They are loved and appreciated by us. There is a risk of turning Medway into on giant urban sprawl by filling in these gaps that we have left. Please do not do that, we need these gaps for our health and wellbeing. We feel they belong to us and are part of our heritage as much as the river Medway, the dockyard and historic Rochester are.

I do not support Medway Council's preferred option because it gives a green light to build over swathes of green land. I am strongly against development in the area of countryside extending from Capstone up to Lidsing - the entire area of beautiful countryside, hills and valleys that separates Lordswood from Hempstead.
This is the prettiest area of countryside we have left in Medway and it holds the original character of how Medway once looked. I would like to remind Medway Council that England is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world and this will deplete it further.
