Such First Homes are essential if many people are able to have secure tenure and are able to build their lives in the area. I think that a greater proportion of the planned properties should fall into this category.

With the University of Kent winding down its programmes at the Chatham Maritime Universities at Medway site, the need for student accommodation for those attending university in this area should decrease.

I am concerned about the impact of the Hoo Peninsula development on agriculture and the historic character of the area, but if it going to go ahead, then I support the extension of a rail line into the area to reduce road use by members of the public.

Policy DM19: Vehicle Parking

I am very concerned about the ubiquitous parking on pavements that occurs in Rochester (and elsewhere) and worry that this street parking habit will spread to new housing developments, disrupting the transport hierarchy whereby pedestrians come first, followed by cyclists, then public transport users, then drivers of private vehicles. People with prams, wheelchairs, or carrying shopping cannot get past cars parked on the pavement, and need to walk in the streets.

I agree with the plans to prioritise healthy choices and well-being. However, I would add two things: 1) the promotion of vaping is just as bad as the promotion of shisha or other types of smoking, and should be similarly discouraged, and 2) I am concerned that there are no plans for an additional hospital in the area if over 24,000 new homes are being added to Medway.

I am very pleased to see that unused/underused sites in Chatham are scheduled for this type of residential development.

I am particularly pleased to read the following statement:
The redevelopment of these brownfield, underused and vacant sites will be encouraged where in accordance with other relevant policies in this Local Plan and principles within the Chatham Design Code (2024) and the Chatham Town Centre Masterplan (2019).

I am concerned about the planned addition of 474 homes in the Star Hill to Sun Pier area, even if they are all studio/one-bedroom flats, as it is not a very large area and I am concerned about the impact on not only the heritage appearance/infrastructure of the area, but the environmental impacts on sewage and transport (air pollution).

Although I support the idea that development is only allowed if it increases biodiversity, I don't think that it is possible, when adding 24,000+ new homes, which will include a huge increase in traffic, and the disruption through construction of current patterns of use of Medway by wildlife, both flora and fauna. Animals, especially, cannot adjust easily or at all to huge and sudden changes in their habitats, pathways to mates, nests/dens, food sources, etc.
