Medway is in need of a local plan, but planners need to remember that you need to put provision in place BEFORE getting people to use it. Much of Medway (esp Chatham, Walderslade, Lordswood etc) are very hilly, and cycling only suitable for the very fittest. We encourage Londoners to move here, but build houses miles from stations. And public transport is slow and expensive. It takes half a day to get from Lordswood to Rainham and back. 20-30mins return by car. Speed us essential when needing to get to vulnerable elderly relatives elsewhere in the towns.

Using the river is a great idea. So much more can be made if that.
The hilly nature of Chatham and surrounding areas make cycling pretty impossible for anyone of average fitness, and public transport is not fit for purpose. A trip to Rainham to help my mum would take half a day by bus, but a couple of hours in total by car.

Building on this land will virtually fill up all the remaining green space south of the river. It will fill in the strategic gap between Lordswood and Hempstead. The Gillingham area is already the most over populated area of Kent. I note that some building has been earmarked for north of the river, but there is still a huge disparity between the development on either side of the river, and thus needs to be levelled up before filling in the last remaining green spaces in Gillingham, Rainham, Hempstead and Lordswood.

I see no mention of improvements to J3. Any improvement to J4 will only feed into the case for Lidsing Garden being approved, to the detriment of the Medway Towns. We desperately need more rail capacity. The Medway towns are a huge commuter area. Building houses further and further from the railway line just encourages more car use. I live in Lordswood, and public transport is dire for just about anything. It’s expensive, takes forever, and doesn’t go to where you want it to go. It takes half a day to get Rainham and back.

Of course the land owner is proposing a cross boarder master plan as it’ll help his case for Lidsing, and that will only have a detrimental impact on the residents of the Medway towns.
