Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2023)
Prepared for a sustainable and green future
Representation ID: 956

Respondent: Mrs Alison Wells
I agree with the overall strategic objectives, emphasising constructing flood defences and not building on flood plains around the Hoo Peninsula. All available fields should be used for modern sustainable agriculture and food production to feed local people.

Supporting people to lead more healthy lifestyles is very important. Local health services are inadequate.

Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2023)
Securing jobs and developing skills for a competitive economy

I agree that Medway should be a centre for learning and the local economy and businesses should be grown BUT with regard to Grain and Kingsnorth, the road infrastructure would be inadequate to support this. With only one feasible route on and off the peninsula, any minor incident or road works causes chaos. The alternative relief route which was proposed in the cancelled HIF project was totally inadequate and impractical. It is difficult to see how this problem can be resolved. Maybe better use of the river as a form of transport might be considered.

Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2023)
Boost pride in Medway through quality and resilient development

I agree that our towns and waterfronts should be developed and used effectively and sustainably but supporting this development with adequate infrastructure is crucial. For increased population, we need increased NHS health services: GPs, hospital, outreach facilities, dentists. Excellent public transport from the towns to reach the outskirts of Medway would be needed.

How land is allocated can be extremely upsetting for local communities if quality of life is downgraded by overdevelopment or housing placed to destroy valued views. New housing developments feel soulless and not integrated leaving people isolated. Housing should not be approved on all grades of agricultural land which should be used to feed the population.

I feel strongly that local housing development should be for LOCAL people. I would urge the Local Authority to put the needs of our existing population and their families before importing the overflow from London which at the moment is pushing prices up and making it increasing difficult for our young residents to get places of their own, and also for the more senior residents to move into more desirable accommodation to suit their changing needs.

Developers are promoting land in this area ... on green field sites ... would be expected to be built out quickly responding to market demand ... - this is a frightening paragraph. The Local Authority should be valuing our green field sites as green fields and insisting that development takes place on brownfield sites first. Developments should not be allowed on green sites because it it easier for developers (and better for their profits).

Grain and Kingsnorth provide opportunities but the roads are inadequate for any further increase in HGVs. The local plan must provide a solution to the one road on and off the peninsula and also to the high level of pollution near Four Elms Hill.
