Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2023)

Prepared for a sustainable and green future

Representation ID: 507

Received: 19/10/2023

Respondent: Mr Keith Swaden

Representation Summary:

How do you build a sustainable and green future if you join currently distinct communities to each other, creating large conurbations or worse still a single town emanating from Chatham town centre? All this does is reduce the farmland, woodland and open areas that currently create green buffers and concentrates more housing for more people and ever more cars which would surely lead us further away from Net Zero.

Representation Summary:

Looking to the next 20 year plan 2040 - 2060 that will probably be more of the same, the whole of Medway will become a sprawling town/city. Maybe a Medway City is really the overarching objective of the council.

Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2023)

5.21

Representation ID: 509

Respondent: Mr Keith Swaden

Representation Summary:

Why would you consider re-developing Chatham Docks? This provides a diverse range of commercial business now and potentially in to the future. Surely, such a key site should be maintained as a dock but also developed to make the best commercial use of the site today and in to the future. This would be in-line with the plan's heritage-led approach to managing potential change, reflecting the area's special character and historic significance especially regarding it's maritime heritage.

I am sure a continuous walk/cycle path could still be developed to link St Mary's Island to Chatham Waterfront.

Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2023)

5.23

Representation ID: 510

Received: 19/10/2023

Respondent: Mr Keith Swaden

Representation Summary:

The apartment block developments along Pier Road over the last few years has greatly improved the area and provides many homes. However, if Chatham Docks was also developed for housing, there would just be continuous lines of apartment blocks all the way to St Mary's Island. This would just be taking this sort of development too far and will lose the distinctive heritage provided by the docks. Any plan for Medway needs to include diversity and Chatham Docks definitely provides this, especially if it is fully developed as a port and business park, specifically related to shipping activity.
