St marys Island and the Dockside currently have no link to the Chatham Waters area where the Asda is. This is negative for students and does not give them easy access to these areas. Having a redeveloped industrial area that is clean and bright to walk through with the potential tram line to Gillingham High Street can hopefully opne up a whole new link to the redevelopment and brighter look to this area through the local plan.
I know people personally and know that from my own experience being an avid runner that the Chatham Docks area should be redeveloped now as it is much more beneficial in the long run as a redeveloped area. My mother lives on St Marys Island and we feel that the island is very closed off from the rest of what the waterfront along to Gillingham has to offer. If I wanted to walk to the Gillingham Asda, I would have to walk down that awful path next to the road and breathe in the dust from the lorrys during this time. I therefore feel like the Chatham Waters and St Marys Island along with the dockside, do not link up well at all at the moment. Having this redeveloped with a through road and the ptoential of a tram line to Gillingham High Street would not only open up these two areas but hopefully bring some affluence into the High Street which is currently in such an awful state of decline. It would not only bring homes but bring a cleaner and brighter area for residents of St Marys Island and the new Chatham Waters area as far as the student accomdation could be great for them to access not jsut the town but also Chatham Dockside.
