Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2023)

Prepared for a sustainable and green future

Representation ID: 513

Received: 20/10/2023

Respondent: Mr Ben Sawyer

Representation Summary:

Chatham Docks has significant benefits for the local Co2 emissions by allowing products to come in by sea instead of road. 1 ship of 4000 tonnes of cargo would take around 145 heavy goods vehicles to transport. Chatham Docks has around 180 ships per year, therefore that would be a potential on C. 26,000 more heavy goods vehicles required on Medway roads if it is not protected from development.

5.3

Representation ID: 516

Received: 20/10/2023

Respondent: Mr Ben Sawyer

Representation Summary:

While it is noted that housing is required, Chatham Docks is not the place for this and has already lost around 1/3 of it's land 10 years ago to housing developers. Please note that within this 10 year period there has been less than 800 units built, just 80 per year as average. The ongoing success of Chatham Docks as an industrial port is critical to ensure jobs are maintained.

Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2023)

5.21

Representation ID: 521

Received: 20/10/2023

Respondent: Mr Ben Sawyer

Representation Summary:

For context, the relocation of the steel fabricator ArcelorMittal from berth 1 to berth 4 to allow the building of ASDA cost the business around £3 million. A business that works very hard to be able to make even £1 million in a year and employees around 200 skilled workers. That move was around 300 meters and was done mostly with the businesses own plant. To relocate again outside of Chatham Docks and on public highways could be devastating for the business and would certainly result in redundancies and moving out of Medway.
