Support moves to provide choice and a mix of homes, particularly custom and self-build housing. The Plan should ensure that some smaller sites are allocated for growth to give local construction companies the chance to provide good quality, well designed and sustainable homes as alternatives to large scale uniform estates built by one national developer.

Innovation should be supported in providing more energy efficient buildings which are designed to reflect local distinctiveness. This is more likely to be achieved through developing smaller sites in Medway’s villages for custom or self-built homes. Local construction companies who have a good understanding of the special character of Medway’s different areas have an important role to play in achieving this strategic objective.

Agree that large scale development in Hoo St Werburgh and small sites in neighbouring villages, such as Chattenden have considerable potential to make a substantial contribution to meeting Medway's greener growth needs subject to improvements in services and infrastructure.

Investment should be directed to addressing the air and noise pollution created by slow moving heavy vehicles on Four Elms Hill to improve the environment for existing residents and to realise the potential of small sites in Chattenden to contribute towards meeting Medway’s greener growth targets. Reinforcing and widening the existing native tree and shrub buffer alongside this stretch of highway could go some way to mitigating these pollution problems and serve to increase biodiversity.
