Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2024)
Vision for Medway in 2041
Representation ID: 3733
Received: 08/09/2024

Medway shou be itself and not try to emulat other , trendy places. aim should be to put quality of life first for residents , such as social care and Childrens services, nothing grandiose or smacking of misplaced arrogance or insecurity. We have plenty of history to be proud of. Please NO CITY BIDS.
Take air pollution seriously, do basic services right. Get the roads paved otherwise you give the wrong impression. Get freedom of movement into Chatham Historic Dockyard so that it becomes part of the towns. get out of the entrepreneurial mode which the council cannot do. (IPM)

Retain Docks. Send signal to Peel and they will give up and sell out to the docks companies who have plans
Relying on words of Peel is trampolining on tissue paper. They'll leave site derelict years while they say it's unviable, ask for central government funding to make "viable" creaming off the profits. If it isn't viable for housing let it be used for what it does now!!
Get council leadership out of the IPM, They have been disastrous and companies will not want to have the landlord being the local council. How many millions have been wasted on this?

why not mandate solar panels in all new houses?
make sure developments have enough parking spaces - our public transport isn't good enough and we can't rely on it.
DONT BUILD FLATS. ITS A RECIPE FOR DISASTER.

MAKE SURE NOT EVERYTHING iS LOadED ONTO the peninsula. That place is a gold mine for JOBS not houses. if you build too many houses you will spoil the traffic situation for the jobs. It also needs to be spread out fairly so that homes go onto Cqapstone area ( grade three land) and Rainham area. DO not ruiN THE GRADE ONE LAND BY BUILDING ALL OVER IT. IT IS NEEDED FOR FOOD SUPPLY.

CDOCKS SHOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED A BROWNFIELD SITE. The loss of jobs would weaken Medway's economy and the site also has problems when considering housing, not least from the traffic and fumes.. flood risk etc.
Any strategy should protect this site and allow it to be enhanced for jobs alone. Peel is looking at the profits they could make, while still leaving signs of its own strategy i.e. saying the land is non viable and then asking for government help in flood derisking etc. If IPM is a total failure how can the council decide to let this site go?

governance of Birdwise needs to be looked at- its chairman was the leader of the council and its efforts to protect wildlife have been "strangely" anodyne. giving them so much money is wasted when they are compromised in such a way.

Some of the footpaths do need better signposting and protection and maintenance and perhaps some of the money being funnelled into the ineffective and compromised Bird Wise can go in this direction. perhaps some paths can be made dual bike/walker to make them more viable, as many more people are taking up biking.

Policy DM1: Flood and Water Management

I have seen first hand new "infill" developments overwhelm sewerage systems. leading to people's houses flooding after having been there for many decades without an issue. ( this is surface water dranage in a hilly area) Perhaps some s106 monies can be placed into monitoring and preventing both this and the task of sustainable driveways. Too many people concrete over their driveways without permission and without drainage. The enforcement team need to be beefed up.

Policy DM3: Air Quality
Representation ID: 3779

The air quality team at Medway have been underfunded and their policies have had no backup from the rest of the council and are hence ineffective. This places the health of Medway's residents at risk. The team should be properly backed by senior management and then they would not produce such weak policy documents full of ifs, buts and maybes which are never implemented.
