There is no need to focus on Medway as a regional city. Should not force something that it is not. Rochester is the natural city of the area, so if we do want to have city “status” then I feel it would be better to put out efforts into this. Medway council should instead allow each town to keep its unique identify.
All other aspects would agree with. A thriving economy and residents enjoying a good quality of life, while addressing climate change are all great things to aim for.

Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2023)
Securing jobs and developing skills for a competitive economy

It is important to protect the jobs and industries that already exist in Medway. Chatham Docks is under threat by Peel Ports wanting to convert that areas into mixed development. Peel Ports have already built flats on part of their land and the rest of Chatham Docks should be protected and allows to remain as a working dock. Business cannot just move to any piece of land when they are reliant on the river. I strongly oppose this area having the land designation changed.

Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2023)
Boost pride in Medway through quality and resilient development

Would definitely support the best use of brownfield land. Trying to protect our green spaces and areas of natural beauty by building on land that has already been developed should be encourage.
Also support the building of homes in the urban areas, near existing public transport, to help improve exiting public transport and also improve retail in the town centres. This will help reduce car dependency which I support to help improve peoples health but keeping us fit and improving the air quality .

I note the change of use for some areas on the Medway City Estate. Traffic on this areas has been challenging over the years, but has recently started to improve. To introduce residential into this areas I feel would be a mistake. There will be conflicts with the mix and also business have invested a lot into the area for it to start to change becoming residential. This will cause worry and businesses may start to leave prematurely.

A good local plans is needed for the area, but unless we can challenge the housing numbers set by national government my fear is that we will not be able to meet the targets each year, and then developers will be able to come into other areas that we have not included. We need to establish what Medway’s housing needs is and what is achievable, this will then protect the area and will assist how local residents and the local planning authority what the area to develop.

We should strongly oppose these numbers. Not only are they not achievable in the current market, but they are over what is needed for the current population in the area and how that population is growing. Otherwise we are just overdeveloping the area unnecessarily, and negatively impacting the quality of life for existing and new residents.

As previously stated I understand there is a need to build more homes to ensure that local people have somewhere to live. That young people are able to move out of their parents accommodation. Can buy a property if they wish, or rent if they wish. But currently we are building properties that are too expensive for many local people. They will therefore continue to be out priced by others moving into the area and we will never meet our need. Developers will only build houses when they know they can sell them for the highest price.

This is a major concern for most residents of Medway. Unable to get around the towns is incredibly frustrating and happens already when there is an incident on any road or motorway. This will be made worse with the large scale development that is within this plan. Not only is it frustrating but is also very bad on health for all residents with the air pollution this will provide.

This will be challenging if it cannot be incorporated within our numbers. What requests have we made of our neighbouring boroughs? In particular Maidstone who have oversupplied their housing need.

Again this needs to be challenged if we want the people of Medway to have a good quality of life. I believe we have a strong argument. The south east in general has good arguments.
