Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2023)

A commendable vision, written using all the in vogue, flavour of the month buzz words. In fact, the " distinct character of it's (Medway's) different towns, neighbourhoods and villages" is being continually eroded.
Much more emphasis needs to placed on a bus service that is efficient, reliable, clean and a pleasure to use.
Developments taking place at the moment are expensive and restrictive - far too many flats. Placing people in boxes in the sky. Far too many single properties being given planning permission to convert to homes for multiple occupants. We are building future slums.

Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2023)
Prepared for a sustainable and green future

The answer to tackling climate change lies PARTLY in providing clean, reliable public transport. This is seriously wanting in Medway. We are a long, way off getting people out of their cars, myself included. Cyclists have to negotiate pot holed roads, train travellers are at the mercy of unions. Many cycle lanes popped up during Covid and some are positively dangerous. And many, unused. The one opposite Dock Road's Gun Wharf being a good example. Narrowing car lanes to provide a cycle lane just won't cut it I'm afraid.
And how green is it to allow development on greenfield sites?

* less flats, more bungalows, houses.
* Sufficient parking with new builds
* When developers commit to providing facilities, they should be held to this. A financial donation is simply not enough. It's not enough either to promise a shop or a play area. Its a cop-out!
*A timescale for completion or penalties applied. developments in my area that are still unfinished after SEVERAL years include, The Victoria Cross, Lordwood Lane, 'Luxury homes', Upper Luton Road, Southern Water land, Capstone Road, Flats at Heron Way Princes Avenue junction, Kestrel Shops area, Lordswood. Eyesores and anti social behaviour magnets.

Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2023)
Securing jobs and developing skills for a competitive economy

Chatham Docks must be left as Chatham Docks!! There is much reference to Medway's heritage, river and waterfront potential in the proposed plan. It should not be the case that all waterfront land be turned over to residential use. You contemplate improving river usage for transport then do away with Chatham Docks?
To improve outcomes for employment, the plan must include provision for youth groups. Little support is shown for the sterling work of Scouts, Sea Cadets, Chatham Royal Marine Cadets, Girl Guides etc... These groups nurture our future and more encouragement and support should be forthcoming.

* Ensure development keeps to a strict timeline or apply penalties, to halt unfinished work lying empty for ages.
* Severely limit greenbelt building when there are so many dilapidated and uninhabitable properties littering the towns.
* Seriously consider not allowing so many pop up burger bars and fast food outlets all over Medway.
* Consider the availability of allotments. So many flats with no green space. More gardens or allotments please.
* Increase medical clinics / facilities to alleviate the pressure on Medway Hospital which is drowning under our ever increasing population.

I agree. And the whole proposed plan must be widely advertised (not just on-line) to allow local people a say.

Whichever method is used to predict Medway's Growth Outcome , it is clearly not going to provide all the answers to the housing problem. People cannot be blinded with statistics and graphs. They only see that most of the housing being built is neither affordable, nor for local people. 5 huge blocks on Chatham waterfront - all for private purchase or private rental. 109 properties built at Garrison Point - only 10 for MHS. All of the houses on the Southern Water site, advertised privately in London etc... etc...
MORE SOCIAL HOUSING.

It is not rocket science to comprehend the appalling condition of Medway's roads. Congestion, potholes, speed humps (which only serve to increase pollution), lack of parking space, poor signage, degraded road markings, overgrown roundabouts and verges etc... Medway is not a nice place to drive. Going 'Green' and attempting to get us all onto a bus is a non-starter. Ensuring newbuilds have a sensible parking area is a must and more strategic use of parking wardens essential. At present all to be found in car parks tracking ticket dodgers. Perhaps an occasional walk along the Luton Road?

Chatham Docks provides much needed employment ( helpful in limiting out- commuting) and is an economic asset. It is also historic. These are qualities expressed as important in the proposed plan. Chatham Docks could be extremely helpful with transportation.
