Prepared for a sustainable and green future

The Climate Crisis cannot be addressed by building housing development on farm land. The destruction of green infrastructure to build high carbon housing is unwise in the extreme.

Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2023)
Supporting people to lead healthy lives and strengthening our communities
Representation ID: 1628
Received: 31/10/2023
Respondent: Mr Roger Brown
Medway Council must stop using the Hoo Peninsula as a dumping ground for housing for Londoners and people from adjacent councils. The Peninsula has already taken more than its fair share of housing development for the whole Medway Council, the majority of these homes are out of reach of those earning the median income for existing residents of Hoo Peninsula. The Peninsula should be Medway’s equivalent of a National Park and should be treated as such.

Boost pride in Medway through quality and resilient development

The overdevelopment of certain areas such as the Hoo Peninsula have shown that bad, unbalanced building of dormitory suburbs for London’s workers has never boosted pride in Medway. It only provides a larger pool of service users with little interest in supporting local communities.

There should be no further use of land on the Hoo Peninsula unless it is brownfield and ONLY BROWNFIELD LAND. All planning applications for the development of greenfield land should be rejected by the Planning Committee.

A Local Plan should only support truly sustainable development in areas where the ecosystems cannot be destroyed. THE NATIONAL GOVERNMENT DEFINITION OF SUSTAINABILITY IS DEFINITELY NOT SUSTAINABLE, ask any untainted scientists.

The National Planning Policy Framework is widely blamed for the Housing Crisis together with the Right to Buy policy which has destroyed the essential Council Housing social provision . 3,4 and 5 bedroom “Executive” Housing is irrelevant to people who have been driven into homelessness by the policies of the government.

This section is only of any use if a scientific definition of sustainability is at the heart of the plan. There is no such thing as economic sustainability, only environmental degradation. Global heating was not created by ecological sustainability because there wasn’t any!
