Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2024)
Policy S13: Innovation Park Medway
Representation ID: 3857
Received: 08/09/2024
Respondent: Miss Rachael Selleck
I disagree with the assertion that Innovation Park Medway is ideally suited for high-value technology industries and collaborative spaces. The focus on high-tech companies and advanced industries may overlook the broader needs of the local community and economy. This approach could exacerbate regional inequalities, as the high-tech sector might not provide sufficient employment opportunities for all skill levels or address the diverse economic needs of the area. A more inclusive strategy that balances high-tech development with support for a range of industries and local businesses could better serve the community and foster broader economic growth.

Policy T12: Learning and Skills Development
Representation ID: 3860

In Medway, and especially in Allhallows, there is a pressing need for more schools. Our local primary and secondary schools have been operating at full capacity for years and will likely remain so. It's misleading that housing developments in our village advertise proximity to a local primary school without disclosing that the school is already overcrowded. This lack of transparency exacerbates the problem, as new residents may be unaware of the limitations on educational facilities, further straining the system and impacting the quality of education for all students.

Policy T13: Tourism, Culture and Visitor Accommodation
Representation ID: 3865
Received: 08/09/2024
Respondent: Miss Rachael Selleck
The council needs to focus on promoting tourism that genuinely benefits the local area. In Allhallows, the Haven Holiday Park has brought chaos rather than positive impacts. Despite ongoing issues like crime—ranging from money laundering to violent incidents—and a significant rise in car accidents involving park visitors, the park continues to expand unchecked. The increase in antisocial behaviour and traffic problems has made the village less safe. It’s essential that tourism development enhances local well-being and safety, rather than exacerbating existing issues.

Policy S14: Supporting Medway's culture and creative industries
Representation ID: 3866
Received: 08/09/2024
Respondent: Miss Rachael Selleck
I agree with the aim to support, enhance, and expand Medway's diverse cultural infrastructure and creative industries. However, this should not be a blanket excuse for unchecked development. It's crucial that the council properly consults with local communities before making decisions. Local residents have a much deeper understanding of their areas and their needs than the often out-of-touch council. Engaging with them will ensure that developments genuinely benefit the community and respect its unique character.

Policy T14: Rural Economy
Representation ID: 3870
Received: 08/09/2024
Respondent: Miss Rachael Selleck
The proposed developments in Allhallows and Fenn Street starkly contradict the policy aims. They threaten high-grade agricultural land, create excessive traffic on unsuitable rural roads, and are not in scale with the rural surroundings. These developments also risk undermining key rural services and facilities, lack high-quality architectural design, and fail to respect the character of the area. Additionally, they do not adequately address potential harm to residential amenity, designated heritage assets, or environmental resources and biodiversity. The plans neglect to provide sufficient measures to mitigate environmental impacts, undermining the sustainability and integrity of the rural community. Put this into practice!

Policy S15: Town Centres Strategy
Representation ID: 3872
Received: 08/09/2024
Respondent: Miss Rachael Selleck
Before considering the construction of additional houses, infrastructure improvements must be prioritised. Investing in town centres, enhancing local shops, and supporting businesses is crucial. The current infrastructure is inadequate and struggles to support existing demands. Focusing on these areas will ensure a solid foundation for any new developments, improving the quality of life for current residents and creating a more sustainable environment for future growth. Proper investment in infrastructure will also foster economic vitality and provide essential services, making any new housing developments more viable and beneficial to the community.

Policy S16: Hierarchy of Centres
Representation ID: 3873
Received: 08/09/2024
Respondent: Miss Rachael Selleck
Chatham has deteriorated significantly over the past decade, with its shopping centre becoming increasingly unsafe due to frequent incidents of robbery, assault, and vandalism. Many shops have closed, leaving the area in decline. Instead of focusing solely on new housing developments, urgent investment in Chatham’s infrastructure is needed to address these safety and economic issues. Enhancing local amenities, improving public safety, and revitalising the shopping centre should be priorities. This approach will not only uplift Chatham but also provide a stronger foundation for any future housing projects, ensuring they contribute positively to the community.

Policy T15: Sequential Assessment
Representation ID: 3875
Received: 08/09/2024
Respondent: Miss Rachael Selleck
Infrastructure development in Medway is crucial and should be prioritised over new housing projects. Without a robust infrastructure—encompassing roads, public transport, utilities, and local amenities—new housing will only exacerbate existing issues like traffic congestion, inadequate services, and reduced quality of life. Investing in infrastructure will support sustainable growth, improve living conditions, and ensure that any new developments can be effectively integrated into the community. Prioritising infrastructure will provide a solid foundation for future housing and help address current problems, ultimately benefiting residents and fostering a more balanced, functional environment.

Policy T17: Impact Assessment
Representation ID: 3877
Received: 08/09/2024
Respondent: Miss Rachael Selleck
Medway Council must conduct thorough impact assessments and genuinely consult with the local community rather than relying on inadequate reports. The current approach often seems disconnected from the real issues facing Medway, resulting in decisions that do not reflect local needs or concerns. To ensure effective and beneficial development, the Council needs to improve its engagement with residents and address their feedback seriously. Proper consultation and accurate assessments are essential for making informed decisions that genuinely benefit the community and address the true needs of the area.

Policy S17: Chatham Town Centre
Representation ID: 3878
Received: 08/09/2024
Respondent: Miss Rachael Selleck
Chatham town centre requires urgent and significant investment to address its decline over recent years. The area has deteriorated, with safety concerns such as increased crime and numerous shop closures. To revitalise Chatham and restore its appeal, a comprehensive redevelopment plan is essential. This should focus on improving safety, enhancing infrastructure, and supporting local businesses. Without substantial investment and strategic improvements, Chatham will continue to suffer, impacting both residents and visitors. Prioritising these changes will help rebuild the town centre into a thriving, safe, and vibrant hub.
