Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2024)
Vision for Medway in 2041
Representation ID: 3945
Received: 08/09/2024
Respondent: Miss Rosamund Beattie
The natural world requires carbon to function, the carbon hysteria aligned with big 'green' business must not damage Medway. The forecast increase in population will further damage our estuary SPA/Ramsar sites & birds. The heritage scapes are forecast to be decimated and dominated by ugly highrises, Ironmonger's Yard is testimony to that. If you foam insulate older cavity walls you are not "less vulnerable to the impacts of climate change such as overheating". You contradict yourself. You are more vulnerable to damp and rot in the property. Building on any farmland is undesirable, we are not self sufficient.

Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2024)
Prepared for a sustainable and green future

"Sustainable travel" ie walking is not sustainable for the elderly. An octogenarian is not going to cycle to the supermarket in the rain. Public transport is dire, the only good transport is the railway. Buses are irregular and infrequent & unreliable. This needs to be addressed to carry the working population who pay tax to keep the economy going. There is nothing wrong with the air quality, I sniff an oncoming justification for a ULEZ type charge. Southern Water executives need to be held to account to improve waste water pollution. Not in the remit of Medway. Carbon impacts? Ridiculous.

Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2024)
Supporting people to lead healthy lives and strengthening our communities

Carbon is not going to kill us, this is a new cultish religion that has no place in a local plan. It is simply a mechanism to pile costs onto the taxpayer. As you intend to build over rural and farmland, I am not sure how this equates with 'safe green infrastructure' and 'mental wellbeing'. I don't think the council should be busying itself with nanny state 'healthy food choices' its council tax payers may choose nor not to make. Supporting start ups, innovation, entrepreneurship and the young is important. A covered market on Ironmonger's Yard site would be ideal.

Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2024)
Securing jobs and developing skills for a competitive economy
Representation ID: 3961

Medway has a broad skills and industrial base and and this is the lifeblood of the towns. The Chatham Docks should not be turned into flats, we need good employment and opportunities to train the young in skills and trades. We do not need more flats for those on London salaries. Engineering and the creative industries are well known in this area and I support their support and growth. Wages in Medway are low which is why so many commute to London, this would be well addressed if better career options can be found here.

Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2024)
Boost pride in Medway through quality and resilient development

I would like to know what these travel choices are. No doubt the bicycle. If Medway intends to infest the towns with cycle lanes then please ensure cyclists are trained, tested, plated and insured. Ditto scooters, or finally enforce the law and get them off the pavements. And roads. The infrastructure in terms of bus transport is poor, rail is good. Improve the bus services. In Rochester we are not seeing much sustainable development, we are seeing ugly highrise blocks spring up to the detriment of the conservation areas and historic nature of the city.

Provide a scientific basis for your commitment to a net zero carbon Medway. Please do not repeat the mantra that the science is settled. It is not. And this is simply the new acid rain, ozone, or whatever else the public needs to be frightened with in order to part with their cash. Protect wildlife, the estuaries, nature reserves and prevent water pollution. Do not build on greenfield or farmland. That is what you can do of practical use to the natural world.

Provide the scientific basis for your commitment to a net zero carbon Medway. Please do not repeat the mantra that the rest of the public have been frightened into believing, the science is not settled and carbon is not going to kill us any more than it killed anyone six hundred years ago. Bus transport is terrible, this needs improvement if you want people to stop using cars, the rail services are fine. Cycle paths must not be built at the expense of vehicle lanes, roads are already narrow and this would only increase idling engines and pollution.

This option turns the Chatham Docks into flats. We need industry and employment here, not flats for the London salaried. Historic Rochester is already too heavily built upon given it is the jewel in the Medway crown and relies on heritage tourism, supported by the conservation areas and their lovely historic architecture, now threatened by ugle towers like Ironmonger's Yard. The development in Hoo look like large ink spots, what do these ink spots actually mean? There is one arterial road for access and this will inevitably cause problems as there around 9 inkspots adjacent to this roadway.

Build on the places that are already concrete and ugly. Kindly provide evidence for the climate emergency in Medway, I have noticed nothing which suggests there is no emergency. I can see the push for 15 minute cities - 'reducing the need for travel and designing for walking & cycling'. Sounds great in theory but in practice does this mean you will remove carriageways for cycle lanes? And introduce a carbon tax for those who dare to use their petrol cars? Urban drainage needs improvement, too much water runoff from newly developed concrete buildings/roads. Where is the overheating??

A simple influx of people to an area has a negative effect on SPA / Ramsar sites due to the recreational activities and most notably dog walking. Developments ideally should be as far from these protected sites as possible and not build on arable land. We lack food security as it is and building on farmland is wholly irresponsible.
