Medway Local Plan (Regulation 18, 2024)
Policy T1: Promoting High Quality Design
Representation ID: 1948
Received: 12/08/2024
Respondent: Phillip Ivory
Support all points. Would suggest implementing design codes for all areas of Medway asap. Keeping this up to date. Shame poor design publicly and praise good design. There needs to be an incentive to design well. Current the market doesn’t require developers to do so, therefore the council and residents need to ensure they have the ability to enforce good design. Has the council considered a ‘good design panel’ formed of independent professionals as a paid for and required pre app service? Harlow in Essex has a similar scheme which has worked very well!

Policy DM7: Shopfront Design and Security
Representation ID: 1951
Received: 12/08/2024
Respondent: Phillip Ivory
Would suggest for ‘new or remodelled commercial or retail frontages’
We should ensure existing storefronts are in keeping and high quality as well.
Our high streets are messy and occasionally ugly!

There is already government guidance on advertisement so I’m not sure how this resolves anything? I think this is more of an issue for development management/ planning breaches.

Support. Given the vast quantity of heritage assets in Medway, developer contributions should be sought. Heritage should be integral to design and should be integrated into development.
